Kate Humphrey Tackett

April 21, 1916 - December 10, 2009

Kate Humphrey Tackett, 93, of Russellville, died Thursday, December 10, 2009 at St. Mary's Regional Med Center.  The daughter of Oliver and Barbara Godwin English, she was born April 21, 1916 in Atkins.  She was a graduate 1933 Atkins High School.  She worked for the WPA as a timekeeper and then for the Russellville Phone Company.  She married Herman Humphrey on August 10, 1940 in Russellville.  Growing up in her beloved Atkins, as a young girl, she said she wanted to marry a boy from the big town of Russellville. She married Herman Humphrey on August 10, 1940. She and Herman purchased Gardner Funeral Home in 1960 from the late Guy Gardner.  They lived in the apartment over the funeral home located at 2nd and Denver for 30 years. On August 9, 1963 they adopted 7 year old Corbit Wilson, and gave him the name Jim Bob Humphrey.  Kate worked as a teller with The Bank of Russellville, later known as the First National Bank for over 20 years.  Herman passed away following 57 years of marriage.  She later married her childhood classmate, Rayburn L. Tackett.  They enjoyed attending Atkins High School class reunions and Tackett family reunions.  She was a member of the Bank of Russellville retiree's VIP Club and The Associated Women for Harding College. She was a long time member of the 5th and Greenwich Church of Christ and later the West Side Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Jessie Herman Humphrey and Rayburn L. Tackett; 2 brothers, William E. English, Foy W. English; a sister, Elva English Theede.

Survivors include a son & daughter-in-law, Jim Bob & Betty Humphrey of    Russellville; granddaughters, Elizabeth L. Humphrey of New Orleans, LA. and Jennifer A. Humphrey of Centerton; grandson, James M. Humphrey of Russellville; 2 great grandsons, Landon Morgan Humphrey of Centerton and Oliver France Humphrey Lambeth of New Orleans, LA.; a brother-in-law, J.D. Humphrey of Russellville; a sister-in-law, Ann Humphrey of Lubbock, TX.        

Funeral will be at 2:00PM, Saturday, December 12, 2009 at Humphrey Chapel. Dan Lightfoot and Bruce Grice will officiate.  Private burial will be at Rest Haven Memorial Park by Humphrey Funeral Service.  Visitation will be from 6:00pm to 7:30pm, on Friday, at the funeral home.
