At 1:20 p.m. on April 24, 1967, a baby boy was born at the home place on Nick Springs Road in Lawson, Arkansas. Later in the day during a trip to the doctor’s office in El Dorado, he was named Garland William Willis by his step-grandfather, William King and the doctor’s nurse, Mrs. Bamma Washington. Garland was in honor of the family’s late doctor (Dr. Garland Murphy, Jr.) who had died a few months before the birth. William was in honor of his step-grandfather, William King who he would spend many years with. It had become very clear to everyone that this child would be very different! Earlier in the day when the midwife, Mrs. Virginia Stanley, had made a face at him to get Garland to cry and take his first breath, he laughed instead! Also, the new family doctor, Dr. Garland Murphy, Sr., had told everyone that the baby would come in May! His reply was that he was a little early! Garland’s early education was in Lawson and later at Old Union School. Later the family moved to El Dorado. Garland was a 1986 graduate of El Dorado High School, where he had been an active member of the Beta Club, BASIC (Brother And Sisters In Christ), the Oratorio Choir and Boy’s State for two years. After graduation Garland enrolled at Commonwealth College of Funeral Service (now Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service) in Houston, Texas. Garland was the only person from Arkansas in his class and he was given the honor of being elected class chaplain. He graduated from Commonwealth in the Fall class of 1987. Graduation was on a Friday and he reported for work the next day at Andrews Funeral Home in El Dorado (August 28, 1987). While at Andrews, Garland served as a licensed funeral director #2723, an agent for Andrews Burial Association, agent for Selected Funeral and Life Insurance Company in Hot Springs, an at-need minister and as the funeral home’s historian/researcher. He remained there until his death. Garland was a member of Providence Lodge #94 Knights of Pythias, where he served as Prelate. In the Grand Lodge of Arkansas Jurisdiction. He served in the office of Grand Master of Finance. In the year of 2000, Garland became a member of Kiwanis Club. He served as vice president, as a board member a number of times and in 2003 he became the first black man in the El Dorado club’s history to serve as president. Also for many years Garland served as chairman or co-chair of Spiritual Aimes and was in charge of the Kiwanis/Ministerial Alliance Prayer Luncheon in honor of the National Day of Prayer. On Sunday, February 23, 1992, Garland became a member of First Baptist Church of El Dorado. In 1997 Garland was given the high honor of being the first black man to be elected to the office of deacon in the 150-year history of First Baptist. Years later Garland felt a tug at his heart and in 2009 he was licensed by First Baptist as a Southern Baptist minister. Then on September 11, 2011, Garland was ordained to the gospel ministry. Garland used his gift by filling in on Wednesday night at prayer meeting and by filling in at other churches. In 2014 Garland started attending First Presbyterian Church of El Dorado, where he became a member on Sunday, December 21, 2014. While a member here, Garland served as a member of the Chancel Choir, lay reader, deacon and as an at-need minister for First Presbyterian and other churches in the Presbytery of the Pines. To the surprise of many people, Garland was still a member of the men’s Chapel Bible Class at First Baptist and still served as their song leader. He always said that no one else wanted to job! His bass voice could be heard all over South Arkansas across the airwaves. This was a longtime part of the radio ministry of First Baptist Church. Unknown to most people, Garland was an Anglophile. He had a great love for Great Britain, for its history and traditions. He was also a great admirer of the Royal Family. It was Garland’s dream to one day visit London and see all those places that he had read about! One of Garland’s fondest memories was from back in August of 1994. This was when First Baptist their single adult ensemble (One Voice) went on a two-week mission trip to Poland. Here they sang in churches and tent revivals. This was Garland’s first ever plane ride, first mission trip, and first overseas trip!! There were many prayers sent up on his behalf. After landing in Poland’s capital (Warsaw) he found out that there were very few black people there and in some towns there were none! In most of the towns they went to, Garland was the first black person they had ever seen! He spoke of how people would stop talking and stare at him. One pastor’s son even rubbed his hand to see if the brown would rub off and if he was white underneath! It was a time of great fellowship and seeing God’s Spirit move in a mighty way! Garland was preceded in death by his mother, Daisy Lee “Tiny” McDaniel’ his father, F.B. Willis; his stepmother, Everteen Ross Robinson Willis; his stepfather, Charles “Doc” McDaniel; two brothers, Paul Willis and Robert Lewis Willis; a stepbrother, John Henry Robinson; a sister, Erma Louise Willis; a stepsister, Florice Robinson. Survivors are three brothers, The Rev. Daniel J. (Lois) Willis of El Dorado, AR, Frances Shears of Denver, CO and Albert “Pappy” Richmond of San Francisco, CA; two foster brothers, Richard Kelly McMurry of El Dorado, AR and Brandon Scott McMurry of Norphlet, AR; two sisters, Margaret “Margo” Williams of Florrissant, MO and Tyisha Willis of Louisiana; his mother, Candy McMurry; and a great host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 20, 2018, at First Baptist Church with Rev. Lynn Worthen officiating. A viewing will begin at 9:00 a.m. until service time at the church. A private burial will be held at Mt. Zion Cemetery under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors. He was born July 20, 1949, in Harrison, the son of Norman and Lillian (Malloy) Andrews, who preceded him in death. Pat had been a member and served on several committees at First Christian Church in Harrison where he was a deacon and elder. He was also a youth Sunday school teacher for many years and attended several working mission trips with the youth to help clean up and rebuild less fortunate communities. He was a member of CrossRoads Community Church where he helped lead the Security team and was passionate about keeping the children and others safe while they attended church. Pat enjoyed being a Stephen minister and was also a Stephen leader in the Stephen’s Ministry group at CrossRoads, which help those who are facing crisis in life. He was also part of the Hospital Ministry group wherein he visited those of the congregation and/or their families. He went beyond what was expected by driving members to out of town hospital and doctors visits. Tales of him driving people for multiple trips to Little Rock or the VA Hospital in Fayetteville are not uncommon. Pat started his funeral service career at Christeson Funeral Home, which was co-owned by his parents and Dr. William Christeson. He went from high school graduate to the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science where he received his credentials for funeral director/embalmer. Aside from being a lifeguard in high school, Pat never worked anywhere but the funeral home. In 1976, Pat and his brother, Mike, bought Dr. Christeson’s share of the funeral home prior to their father, Norman’s passing. In 1977, when Norman passed away, Pat took over management of the funeral home at the age of 28 and for the next 32 years served the people of Harrison and surrounding Boone County. He married Debbie Edmonson December 17, 1982, and she served by Pat’s side for 26 of his 32 years in the funeral industry. At the age of 60, Christeson Funeral Home sold to the Roller Funeral Homes of Arkansas and for the next 5 years he continued as manager retiring at the age of 65 after serving area families for 47 years. He retired from the funeral industry in 2014. In 2017, Pat was inducted into the Arkansas Funeral Directors Hall of Fame. Pat was a PTA president for several years; he had visited area schools all over Boone and surrounding counties in the 1980s and 1990s speaking to students about suicide prevention and the results of drinking and driving; and helped work with the Cub and Boy Scouts. He also helped with the annual mock driving and driving crash scenes that were staged each year at the area schools, usually before graduation time. Pat was a member of the Harrison Roundup Club in the 1980s and 1990s; was on the K-Life board; was instrumental in the startup of Hospice of the Hills in 1992, and was on the board of directors and served as president. Pat was active in the community before he fell ill in December, 2017 and there’s no telling the numerous memberships and benevolent services he provided over the years to the community there were not recalled by his friends and children. One thing that will always stand out was his assistance he provided to the community when it came to funerals for babies and toddlers. He never charged a family for those services. He felt that the situation was heartbreaking enough for the parents. Christeson Funeral Home was the only funeral home within the area that had this practice, and still does to this day. Before retiring, Pat already had a plan to help others and was working on his next chapter in life. Upon retirement, he became licensed and certified to teach gun safety courses and founded Be Safely Armed. He became a NRA instructor and taught concealed carry. His heart and focus was always on gun safety. He had previously held world titles in competitive pistol shooting. Pat was a very passionate and accomplished man, but the one thing you cannot attach to a committee or award is the number of people he comforted and took care of during their worst of times. He gave back to the community when families were at their lowest point in their life and that is one reason why so many people loved Pat because of his kindness and generosity he provided during those dark times. He cried with families, he prayed with families, but most importantly he never forgot about them. Pat is survived by his loving wife of 35 plus years, Debbie Andrews, of the home; his son and daughter-in-law, Brandon and Janet Andrews; his daughters and son-in-law, Amber and Hugh Thomas and Kasey Andrews (Layman Dunaway); his brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Kay Andrews; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Denise and Landis Dutton; his grandchildren, Drew Curtis, Claire Curtis, Abigail Andrews, Anna Andrews, Lincoln Sims, Sarah Thomas and Joseph Thomas; a host of other family; and many dear friends. He loved his children and grandchildren deeply. Visitation is 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Thursday, September 6, 2018, at CrossRoads Community Church, Harrison. Funeral service is 2:00 PM, Friday, September 7, 2018, at CrossRoads Community Church, with Bro. Johnny Walters and Bro. Paul Braschler officiating. Interment is in Maplewood Cemetery. Pallbearers are Drew Curtis, Ronnie Carpenter, Ricky Morris, Matt Odom, Hugh Thomas and Layman Dunaway. Honorary pallbearers are Lynn and Sue Jenkins, The Roller Family, Dr. Rebecca Simon, CrossRoads Church, Friends of the NRA and the Harrison High School Class of 1967. She was born December 24, 1921, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, the daughter of Edward Joseph and Catherine (Murphy) Malloy. Her father was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and her mother in Nova Scotia, Canada. She was the youngest of 10 children. Lillian left Pawtucket to join the Army. Seven of Lillian’s siblings served in World War II at the same time and all returned alive. Lillian was stationed at the Pine Bluff Arsenal and served as the secretary to a General. She met her husband, Norman Andrews, whom she tried to run off every day, who was also stationed at Pine Bluff as a Master Sergeant assigned to a General as his driver and escort. She said she finally had a date with him to try to get rid of him…..that didn't work. She married Norman and they were married 30 years until his death in 1977. Lillian joined the First Presbyterian Church in Harrison after WWII and settled in to live the remainder of her life in Harrison. She was a member of PEO Chapter AG, a member of Chapter Ki Sigma Sorority, and enjoyed playing bridge. She was volunteered by her children as home room mother about every year in elementary school. She was a member of the PTA and was Den Mother for a Cub Scout troop. She enjoyed reading, playing golf, traveling, camping and fishing. Whatever activity she was involved with she was always at home when the children left and at home when they got out of school. Norman always told the stories about her fishing until he had the motor running; boat turned around and started to accelerate before mom would wind in her line. They enjoyed their camping friends at Peel where they were surrounded by people who wanted to relax, play cards and fish all night. Lillian and Norman sold their camper and bought a small cabin in Diamond City above Coffman Cove around 1975 so they wouldn't have all the problems with hooking up and hauling the camper. They enjoyed their hours on the deck looking at the lake. Lillian was the vice president of Andrews Funeral Home Company and Christeson Funeral Home until it sold in 2009. She enjoyed the role she played in helping to travel and design the first funeral home built in Northern Arkansas. Lillian was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and all her siblings.
